Dark Chocolate Charred Oak Walnut
In northwestern Indonesia lies Sumatra, which is impacted frequently by social oppression and natural disasters. Through the Permata Gayo Cooperative, members have been given an opportunity to be a part of one of the fastest growing organizations in the area. Within four years of their establishment, the cooperative produced 100% Fair Trade and USDA certified organic coffee and housed 2,425 members. Through the aid of Fair Trade Premiums, the cooperative offers educational assistance to its members on organic practices, computer and accounting skills. They also assist with medical necessities for pregnant women as well as the training necessary to equip them for the new job opportunities created by the cooperative’s success.
Members are able to attend international events such as the SCAA and receive up to date informations on quality expectations as well as cupping practices. Three primary programs have been implemented by the cooperative, including an agronomy project which offers farmers educational materials to secure environmental protection, as well as training in harvesting and pruning techniques and soil management skills. The second program trains members in other occupational skills including computers and accounting. Finally, their construction program allows the cooperative to utilize the Fair Trade Premium to reinvest in the community’s mills and processing stations.
Not for the faint of heart, this single-origin is roasted to pack a punch. With an aroma reminiscent of smoke from a freshly charred oak barrel the first sip brings hints of bitter walnut leading to a subtle and smooth body. Hints of tobacco and dark chocolate enhance and balance the syrupy body. The finish is heavy and lingering.
